Great question! Javascript is one of the most versatile, widely used, yet not overly complicated programming language that runs applications in your browser and it works as a backend, server-side language as well. It is a core element of our world wide web and, since its launch in 1995, it has been making our websites more and more interactive and fun and easy to use. As you can see, Javascript is everywhere.
Javascript is not to be confused with the Java language. The two are different programming languages with very distinct characteristics. The naming of Javascript was basically a marketing hack. As Java was the new, hot kid on the block at the time, it seemed like a good idea to take advantage of its popularity by indeed confusing people a bit. So what did they say? Let's name it Java... + Script !
